ARTIST NOTE

These new works on glass continue to reflect Choksi’s desire to connect, as seen in “On the other side,” and in her recent finger paintings on glass. Choksi has been working with glass and mirror to explore meta-art questions of the haptic and the retinal, the status of the artist, and the reason for artwork.  She does this by training attention on facture and vision. The mirror and glass echo connections between the artist, the artwork, and the reflected other/viewer.  Choksi strategically dilates space-time by doubling the mirror with the glass; doubling the mirror-glass pairing across the center line; and doubling the time of making with the time of viewing.  There are gaps left in between the doubles, infrathin--or ultrathick--as they may be.  For “Double un” a sheet of mirror and a sheet of glass were dragged across each other, the surface tension and suction distributing the paint variously.  The drag is the least personal touch, and yet the most personal to the materials.  On the obverse, the glass exhibits tender touches of finger painting. Choksi is tracing her experience of looking at the flattened paint on the other side, as she daubs the top surface with marks. These smudges and daubs are the only bit of paint accessible to the viewer’s touch. The entire work floats in a corner, in effect enclosing the viewer in the gap between the circular reflections.  The frame is a faint shade underneath, revealing the mirror to be one-way.  Everything is both impossibly retinal and inframince.
